Often older people would prefer to live independently, but they realize that they may need help in an emergency. Sheltered housing has become the home of choice for many retired couples and individuals. Sheltered housing facilities may hire nurses, nursing assistants, nutritionists, dietitians, social care workers, orderlies, housekeepers and maintenance staff.

Sheltered housing schemes vary a lot, however many of the following features are usually provided:

• Flats or studios with bathrooms and kitchens
• Laundry
• Communal lounges for social activities
• Gardens
• Guest room
• Security and safety features
• A scheme manager or resident scheme manager
• 24 hour emergency assistance through connection of each flat to a call centre

Sheltered housing, which may also be known as independent living, comprise a type of retirement community that usually features a common entrance and may have a lounge and a laundry, but where the residents live in their own homes. Some additional safety features may be available such as emergency alarm systems, and a resident manager will generally be on-site. Assisted living facilities, or extra care homes, offer additional assistance for residents who are unable to provide for themselves but who do not need round the clock care. Some sheltered housing schemes are specifically for disabled people, and specialised care may be available.

Sheltered housing usually refers to a group of unfurnished homes, with additional social and domestic conveniences specifically for older people. Many sheltered houusing schemes have community gardens, and residents may be able to garden themselves. Scheme managers may put on social events such as trips and parties.
