UK Pharmacies & Chemists Jobs
Contact Information Directory

Pharmacies (chemists) employ pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy assistants. The pharmacist's job nowadays is more supervisory than in the past, and includes taking the general responsibilities for pharmacy operations as well as offering patient care, recommendations and advice. Although a licensed pharmacist must always be on duty, due to economic pressures of healthcare costs, today most of the work of preparing and selling prescriptions is handled by pharmacy technicians and pharmacy assistants.

Pharmacy Technician Jobs

Hospitals also employ pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Training programs for pharmacy technicians include both classroom and laboratory work, covering such fields as medical and pharmaceutical terminology, drug and pharmaceutical calculations, record keeping for pharmacies, and pharmaceutical professional techniques, as well as laws and ethics relating to pharmacies. Pharmacy technician jobs require knowledge of medication names, actions, uses and doses. Pharmacy technician graduates may receive a deploma, certificate, or associate degree.

Pharmacy technician training is vocational, which means that the applicant must obtain a trainee post at a hospital or within a community pharmacy and be working under the supervision of a pharmacist before the training can begin. Trainees will be paid while they are training and most employers will also pay for the costs of the training.

Pharmacy Assistant Jobs

Pharmacy assistant jobs may be entry-level positions, and training received is primarily on-the-job. Some hospitals and pharmacies hire pharmacy assistants. Pharmacy assistants may work as clerks or cashiers, they may stock shelves and answer phones, and they may be involved with pharmacy record keeping and other clerical tasks.

Pharmacy Technician Training, Accreditation and Registration

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain has taken on the responsibility of registering pharmacy technicians, and the primary professional association is the Association of Pharmacy Technicians. The Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE) offers a pharmacy technician learning program, and registered pharmacy technicians may order CPPE learning packs. Fields studied include medication review, minor ailments, substance misuse, and supporting care homes. Organisations which offer advanced training to pharmacists and pharmacy technicians include the NES (Scotland); WCPPE (Wales); Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK; Buttercups Training Limited; London Pharmacy Education & Training; National Development Scheme for Senior Pharmacy Technicians; National Pharmacy Association; National Prescribing Centre; and University of Derby.
