Hospitals are the largest employers of healthcare professionals.
Hospital Jobs in UK
Hospitals employ many thousands of doctors, nurses, nursing assistants, medical technologists, medical technicians, housekeepers, orderlies, billing staff, maintenance staff and bioinformatics specialists. In the UK, and worldwide, hospitals are by far the largest employers of all medical professionals, and provide a significant portion of the total national employment.
UK Hospital Types
In the UK, hospitals are primarily:
- NHS hospitals
- Foundation trusts, which are actually NHS hospitals that have more freedom to manage themselves
- Private hospitals
- Independent sector treatment centres.
British patients now have a choice of which hospital to use. Hospital assignments are made now more and more through the electronic system \"Choose and Book\", which allows the patient to handle their own appointments. Scotland now also uses a patient-focused booking system. Hospital performance ratings may be found online through the Healthcare Commission at

Acute Trusts
Hospitals management is provided by acute trusts. The trusts oversee operations and ensure that healthcare quality is maintained by hospitals, and that money is spent efficiently. A large part of the NHS workforce is employed by acute trusts, including nurses, doctors, pharmacists, midwives and health visitors, plus other healthcare and related occupations physiotherapists, radiographers, podiatrists, speech and language therapists, counsellors, occupational therapists and psychologists. Acute trusts also provide mon-medical staff jobs, including receptionists, porters, cleaners, specialists in information technology, managers, engineers, caterers and domestic and security staff. Some acute trusts may be regional or national centres for specialised care, while others are attached to universities and include teaching hospitals that train health professionals. Acute trusts may provide community services such as health centres, clinics or home care.
Private Hospitals
Due to long waiting times, limited choices and healthcare quality issues, many people prefer to use private hospitals when possible, paying through private medical insurance or in cash. The leading private hospital companies in the UK are Abbey Hospitals, Aspen Healthcare Ltd., Classic Hospitals, HCA International Ltd., Nuffield Hospitals, Ramsay Health Care UK, Spire Healthcare, and The Hospital Management Trust.
